About Us

If it's tasty dumplings you're making, it has to be Atora!

Atora sells enough suet every year to make one million dumplings a week. We can trace our history back to 1893 when Gabriel Hugon set up the first ever factory to manufacture shredded suet, in Manchester, UK.

Since then, Atora has been recognised as a convenient, economical and reliable food, with a good storage life. In fact, a tin of Atora suet was among the supplies taken by Captain Scott on his historical trek to the Antarctic in the early 1900s. It was returned to Atora many years later with the contents still pure and intact.

The name "Atora" was derived from the "toro", the Spanish word for bull, inspired by the fact that suet comes from beef cattle.

Hugon used this association in an early marketing initiative: Carts emblazoned with the company name were used for deliveries, pulled by two oxen.

Atora Original Beef Suet

Atora Vegetable Suet

Atora Vegetable suet can be used in the same way as standard suet and tastes every bit as good. Made from vegetable fats, Atora Vegetable contains no animal products and is thus suitable for vegetarians.

It has been widely reported that the sunflower oil supply chain has been affected by the conflict in Ukraine. We would like to make our customers aware that we may substitute sunflower oil with alternative oils such as rapeseed oil in some of our products - a course of action we have agreed with the authorities (Trading Standards Primary Authority and Food Standards Agency). This will not impact the quality or taste of any of our products but if you would like to receive further details on the products impacted, please drop us an email via the Contact Us page.
What is the best way to store Atora Suet?

For best results and to prevent suet melting keep the pack refrigerated.  Once opened, refrigerate and use within 4 weeks.
